Lia Nici: Jimmy Savile was the ‘talk of the town’ during Keir Starmer visit
Lia Nici has claimed that the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse case was the “talk of the town” during Keir Starmer’s visit to Grimsby last week.
Speaking on Radio 5 Live, the Grimsby MP said that she didn’t blame the Prime Minister for bringing up the false claim again.
She added: “It is appropriate to question whether Sir Keir has the ability to lead”.
“On Friday when Sir Keir popped up in Grimsby, this was absolutely, utterly the number one issue for local people on social media.
“Why is he coming here? We don’t want him. We don’t want him to be the Labour party leader. He did this with the CPS. He should be ashamed.”
Host Nicky Campbell asked her several times to clarify what she was saying, asking: “People on the street and the doorstep in Grimsby were going on about Jimmy Savile?”
Lia Nici replied: “They were, absolutely. People have not forgotten about that.”
Joining her on the air, Labour MP Jim McCarn shared his surprsie at Ms Nici’s comments: “I’m not going to say that Lia isn’t being honest, but you get the general sense for these things when it’s got the air of truth and this doesn’t whatsoever.”
Yesterday, Boris Johnson back-tracked on his claim, stating that he was not talking about Sir Keir’s personal record when he was DPP.
“I was making a point about his responsibility for the organisation as a whole and I think people can see that and I just I really do want to clarify that because it is important,” he said.
Many MPs have publicly slated the PM for spreading the ‘fake news’, which is thought to have originated on Guido Fawkes in 2018, and was shared by popular right wing social media personalities like Tommy Robinson.
