Community invited to join Suggitts Lane litterpick

The litter-pick team based at the new Suggitts Lane footbridge have invited locals to join their community event today.

The initiative comes as part of Story Contracting and Network Rail’s commitment to “making carbon reductions and improving biodiversity.”

The team will be clearing rubbish from green spaces around the new Suggitt’s lane footbridge from 1pm today.

A spokesperson said: “We ask volunteers to bring their own gloves and litter picking equipment. Volunteers can decide how long they wish to help.”

All volunteers will receive a safety briefing ahead of the litter-pick, which will begin at the site compound situated at the end of the North Promenade.

The company says it has an ethos of ‘investing in communities’ and runs regular workshops and cleanups throughout the UK.

“Our aim is to ensure meaningful community engagement and investment is at the heart of everything we do,” continued the spokesperson.

Story Contracting, who have organised today’s litter-pick in association with Network Rail, say they also plan to plant trees in the area, and hope to restore the area to something locals can be proud of.

The event follows a number of complaints from local residents regarding dog mess and litter in the area.

Discussing the condition of the nearby Fuller Street Bridge, one man said he had collected a sack full of cans and bottles away from the area on match day as part of another community litter-pick.

“There really should be cameras in the area – from the look of the mess it seems to be the same few culprits over and over,” he added.

Will you be taking part in today’s litter-pick?
