PMs leadership past point of no return says Tory donor

A Tory donor has said Boris Johnsons leadership is “Past the point of no return”.

John Armitage,  a Tory donor who has donated over £3m says that current geopolitical challenges required “Serious, engaged” politicians.

A Conservative spokesperson said the government remained “fully focused on delivering for the British people”.

Mr Johnson carried out a mini-shuffle of the cabinet on Tuesday, no doubt in efforts to shake growing pressure over allegations and the PMs remarks to Keir Starmer.

There are calls for the PM to resign from various political parties, including the conservatives.

Mr Armitage, told the BBC’s political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, he found the current political situation “tremendously upsetting”.

He described himself as a “very low-profile person” who does not seek political influence.

He has given £3.1m to the Conservatives.

Mr Armitage has also donated smaller sums to the labour party.

Describing himself as a “middle-of-the-road conservative”, Mr Armitage said he admired politicians on the left and right.

He said current global challenges to the West required ”very serious, engaged politicians with a sense of purpose”.

“Politicians should go into politics to do good for their country,”

This comes after the Sue Gray report previously stated NO10 had “Failures of leadership and judgment”

The conservatives have seen resignations since then and reportedly letters of no confidence have been submitted.

Tuesday’s cabinet reshuffle was the latest attempt to improve the operation in Downing Street and move on from weeks of chaos within the party.

“What about a sense of personal responsibility? You know, ‘I’m going to change my chief of staff and it will all be fine.’ Oh, really?”

Mr Armitage said he does not plan to provide anymore financial support as things stand, but will remain a member to retain his vote.
