Locals have their say on new Grimsby Hospital car park

A new decked car park has opened at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby earlier this week.

The two-floor structure is located outside the main entrance and will provide 246 public car parking spaces.

125 are situated on the ground floor and 121 on the upper floor.

This means the new car park has increased the hospital’s parking spaces by 33.

But the £30m development has resulted in mixed responses from hospital staff, patients and visitors

Over 160 people responded to a recent article published by Gi Grimsby News sharing their views.

One member of staff said: “It’s been an absolute nightmare to park onsite. I’ve been getting to work even earlier to just park. So glad the multi story is finally open, it looks great!”

Another Facebook user, who was notably less enthusiastic, commented: “I’ve used the hospital a lot over the last few years and between this new car park and the new A&E development, the disruption has been ridiculous.

“You take your life into your hands dropping elderly and infirm people off at the very badly located drop-off point.

“It’s been a very poorly thought-out plan and the disruption has not been worth what has been gained.”

“Months of disruption for 33 car parking places! I was under the impression the car park was going to have several additional levels,” said another.

“If it wasn’t so frustrating this would be laughable.”

Responding to the complaints, a spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Hospital Trust defended the development.

The statement reads: “The reason we built the new car park was that our new Emergency Department has been built on a big chunk of what was the public car park and we were ensuring we didn’t lose any parking provision as a result of that.

“There are 246 spaces in the new car park.

“Altogether we have 33 more spaces than we did before the work

“When limited funding is available, we will always prioritise spending it on improving our clinical facilities and that’s what we have done here.”
