Talks continue amid proposal for Lincolnshire nuclear waste site

A series of discussions are set to take place amid controversial plans to construct a nuclear waste site in Theddlethorpe, Lincolnshire.

The former ConocoPhillips Gas Terminal in Theddlethorpe, was identified as a potential location for one of the ‘Geological Disposal Facilities’ last summer.

Experts say the facility will be safe and meet environmental regulations, but the proposal has resulted in controversy, with locals opposing the plans and staging protests.

Speaking via Facebook, one said: “Vehicles accessing the site will need to use local B roads, which could become a risk in its self.

“They probably couldn’t of chose a more remote site. I don’t think the plans have been thought through thoroughly at all.”

Another added: “Nuclear waste cannot be ‘made safe’.

“This may not affect any of us old people, but what about future generations? Why is it going on our doorstep and not down south?”

Now, it has been announced that discussion events will take place throughout March and April, giving people the chance to talk with specialists and voice their concerns.

Jon Collins, chairperson of the GDF Working Group said: “It’s important to me that people can ask questions and express their views about the issues that matter to the local communities, but it’s also about discussing the opportunities and potential benefits”.

“I am looking forward to meeting people face to face and continuing the conversations”.

Kate Atha, community engagement manager at Nuclear Waste Services added: “We understand that at this stage people have questions and concerns, and this is the time for them to come forward and engage with us”.

The Theddlethorpe first meeting will be held on March 19th at the village hall, with another on April 1st, at the same location.

There will also be a meeting at Mablethorpe Football Club on Friday, March 25th, and the following day at the community hall.
