By Council plan to tackle transport issues in North East Lincolnshire
Cabinet members have approved nearly £3m of Government money to improve and maintain the carriageways, footpaths, and highway structures of North East Lincolnshire.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, welcomed the funding following a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 9 March.
The funding will be used from April to deliver more than 30 schemes under five areas of work: highway maintenance, public transport, traffic, road safety, and active travel.
Funding will be used to support a variety of initiatives, including improving user satisfaction, connecting people to employment, training, leisure opportunities across the borough, and contributing towards the Net Zero Carbon Roadmap.
Following the approval, Councillor Swinburn, said: “The Local Transport Plan sets out the works to be delivered across the highways and transport service in the coming year. This includes day-to-day traffic and travel management such as highway maintenance and road safety works, which keep our borough moving.
“When we receive funding, we always aim to identify the projects that will bring about the biggest improvements to residents and businesses. These projects not only make day-to-day travel and transport across the borough safer and more efficient; they also have a direct impact on opportunities available to residents in terms of education, employment, and accessing local services.
“We know that, once completed, these schemes will bring benefits to our local communities. We will, of course, ensure that residents and businesses are able to provide feedback on the projects and will invite those directly affected to engage with the projects at the appropriate stages.”
Specific initiatives for the year ahead will include:
- Carriageway resurfacing on the A1136 Great Coates Road between Toothill roundabout and River Freshney
- Traffic signal refurbishment at Dudley Street/Bargate and the introduction of improved pedestrian crossings
- Footpath resurfacing at Wellowgate (between Brighowgate and Abbey Road)
- Pedestrian and cyclist road safety improvements on Armstrong Street near the West Marsh Community Centre
A further £1.1m of pothole funding has been awarded to the council, bringing the highways funding available for the upcoming year to £3,981,000.
