Events to help you celebrate Grimsby Charter Day

Friday 11 March celebrates Grimsby Charter Day, the day of the issuing and sealing of Great Grimsby’s first Royal Charter in 1201.

Great Grimsby Charter Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the first Royal Charter and those that followed over the centuries that still exist in Grimsby’s life.

There is a range of things happening across the town to celebrate Charter Day for all the family to enjoy!

The day will begin with the raising of the Grimsby Borough flag at Grimsby town hall at 10 am on Friday 11 March.

‘All Things Freemen’ exhibition at Freeman Street Market will open allowing the public to view artefacts, images, online content and an audio exhibit. The exhibition will be available to view from Friday 11 March until Saturday 26 March.

Time Trap Museum and Town Hall will also be open Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March (usually closed Saturday). It’s opening hours are: 10 am to 4 pm Friday and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday.

The ‘Royal Connections’ Exhibition at Grimsby Town Hall by Lincs Inspire will be showcasing images and artefacts from visits the area by royalty including Queen Victoria, George V, Princess Mary and Elizabeth II.

There is also a rare chance to see Grimsby’s earliest surviving Royal Charter. The exhibition will be open 10 am to 3 pm Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March. You can find more information here.

A new town centre heritage trail on the Love Exploring app will be launched on Friday 11 March (accessible any time after that). Learn about Grimsby town centre’s history and the buildings that made it what it is today. Created in partnership with the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Civic Society.

Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre will also be offering 10% off entry Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March in honour of Great Grimsby Charter Day.

Cllr Callum Procter, Cabinet member for Economic Growth, Housing and Tourism, said: “Our past will always shape our future and that is why heritage is so important. We are continuing to work hard to re-invigorate the town’s urban areas and that includes a variety of cultural and arts projects, which will offer reminders of that past.

“We have some great stuff planned for this year to celebrate Grimsby and its past, and indeed it’s future. Watch out for more information about events through the summer coming soon.

“The anniversary of Grimsby’s first Charter is something we should be extremely proud of and it’s great to see 11 March being marked in our town’s calendar.”
