Cleethorpes MP admits ‘slip ups’ in handling of Ukrainian refugees

Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, has admitted that the Government is guilty of “delays and slip ups” in the handling of visas for those fleeing Ukraine.

The Government is already facing widespread criticism over its handling of the situation.

Despite this, Vickers is convinced that the Government now has its act together.

This follows the announcement of a scheme which as of Monday will allow British families to host Ukrainian refugees.

Ukrainians with a ID will also be able to complete UK visa applications online.

Speaking to Planet Radio, Martin Vickers said:

“It’s a horrendously complex situation and it has taken some time, but the honest truth is, it’s better to take a day extra and get a system that’s fit for purpose rather than one that crashes after hours.

“We’ve got to make it as generous as possible. certainly in the short term, while people are fleeing for their lives.

“It is a mammoth task for governments across Europe

“Yes there have been delays and slip ups, but I’m confident now that the system is as fit for purpose as it can be in such a short time.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “In the last days the world has witnessed awe-inspiring displays of bravery and heroism from the Ukrainian people in response to those who seek to obliterate their freedom by force.

“The UK will not turn our backs in Ukraine’s hour of need.”

More than 2.1 million people have now fled the country following the Russian invasion.
