The Mariners left frustrated in goalless away draw
The Mariners were unable to convert despite being the better side.
The Mariners were looking to retain their winning streak away to Boreham Wood this afternoon, keeping their promotion aspirations alive.
Grimsby went into the match knowing it would be a tough affair especially as the hosts sat above Town in the league.
Town gaffer, Paul Hurst made numerous changes to his side after their 2-0 win over Yeovil last weekend, Taylor and Sousa preferred over Scannell and Dieseruvwe.
It was the Mariners who started the brightest after John McAtee’s strike marked the first shot on target, Boreham Wood keeper Ashby-Hammond saving with ease.
Grimsby’s Luke Waterfall found himself in a spot of bother after fouling Marsh to prevent a counterattack, receiving a yellow card before the 20th minute.
Town and Boreham Wood were equally matched, both sides pressed with intense pressure although neither side could punish their opponent in the final third.
Coke and Clifton almost put the Mariners in front after a vicious, deflected strike from the captain landed at Clifton’s feet who was unable to keep his effort from rising.
McAtee looked dangerous throughout the first half, forcing last-ditch tackles and skipping past Boreham Wood defenders, but despite his continuous threat, he was unable to convert with the first half ending 0-0.
The second half began in a scrappy manor with both sides giving up possession in dangerous positions, leading to end-to-end attacks.
Much like the first 45, Grimsby had the better chances, a Sousa cross hit with precision found Efete who could only send his effort wide.
Moments later, Taylor picked out Danny Amos with a beautifully weighted through-ball, Amos’s strike saved by the keeper to retain the equal score line.
Grimsby came knocking again which brought the travelling Town fans to life, Boreham Wood now desperate to break the Mariners’ offensive pressure.
Amos pulled the trigger after a poor cross, his effort was deflected towards Waterfall who blasted the ball over the bar.
McAtee could have scored a hat-trick against the playoff contenders after the forward failed to convert two efforts in two minutes, Boreham Wood caught out yet again.
Super substitute, Maguire-Drew almost launched Grimsby into the lead after his strike forced Ashby-Hammond to make a dramatic save on the 85th minute.
Boreham Wood were inches away from stealing all three points but captain Coke’s heroics kept out the danger.
The match ended 0-0, Grimsby would have been frustrated not to have converted at least one of their attempts.
Grimsby play Solihull Moors on Tuesday 22nd March.
