Scunthorpe United investigates handcuff incident

Scunthorpe United are investigating the use of handcuffs by steward staff at their last home match.

The incident took place during the Irons home defeat against Harrogate Town (26 March), another devastating loss which renders National League relegation all but confirmed.

One day after the clash (27 March), a popular YouTube channel, IronArmy, which uploads football vlogs captured the event as it unfolded.

The video began in similar fashion to previous entries on the channel, however the match soon took a sour turn after the camera caught a pitch invader being restrained with excessive force.

During the ordeal, the man had been forced to the ground and surrounded by seven stewards with one using a pair of handcuffs to restrict the perpetrators arm movements.

Shortly after the video had been released, Scunthorpe United issued a statement that condemned the use of such force.

The club said they are aware of events at the Harrogate match and the board have “expressed their disagreement” with saftey stewards using handcuff’s in the ground.

“While this use is legal, it is not something that the fans have seen before or will do again”, they added.

“The club is taking this matter seriously and will continue to investigate”

Scunthorpe have had a woeful season, winning just four league games all campaign, and the latest controversy has exacerbated their situation.
