Grimsby musician jailed for raping young girls

Cassius Povey, a Grimsby guitarist who emotionally manipulated, sexually abused and raped young girls has been sentenced to serve 17 years in prison, it has been reported.

Mr Povey, 29, of Elsenham Road, Grimsby, made a name for himself within Leicester’s music scene.

It is understood he used his popularity to prey on fans after he befriended them on social media.

According to reports, he groomed his young and vulnerable victims before abusing them.

Povey’s deplorable actions targeted individuals with mental health problems and troubled home lives.

One of Povey’s victims had an abortion after falling pregnant at just 14-years-old. She described her ordeal as “the most traumatic thing she ever had to do”

In 2020, one victim bravely spoke out against Povey and his sickening history of abuse on Facebook, encouraging others to follow suit.

After waiving her right to anonymity, Meg Foley took to social media to stand out against the serial predator.

Speaking to the BBC, she said if she hadn’t stepped forward, she had no doubt that “he would still be doing it now”

Povey was sentenced after committing a total of 19 sexual offences, which included eight counts of rape involving five separate victims.

In conjunction to his 17-year custodial sentence, the 29-year-old was placed under an extended license period of three year after the judge considered him as “dangerous”, the Lincolnite said.

Cassius Povey was convicted at Leicester Crown Court in January of this year.

A jury found him guilty of two counts of raping a woman over the age of 16, and six counts of raping a girl aged 13, 14 or 15.

Povey maintained the notion that he thought all the victims were 16 or older, and the sexual activity was completely consensual, during his police interviews.

Judge Robert Brown said Mr Povey had evidenced “no remorse” for his actions during the trial.

Officer in case, DC Kev Sharkey said:

“While this sentence will not change the experiences these young went through, I hope the fact that Povey will be behind bars for such a significant amount of time, offers some comfort”

“The sentencing today has been at the end of a long court process and all the survivors have shown incredible strength, patience and dignity throughout”, he added.

“Their evidence has strengthened the case again Povey, making sure he serves the time behind bars that he deserves”
