Oh My Cod! ‘Monster’ 6ft cod stuns workers at Grimsby fish market

‘Monster’ 6ft cod stuns workers at Grimsby fish market

Grimsby’s fish market was left stunned last week after a ‘monster’ cod landed in the town from Icelandic waters.

The whopping 112lbs fish measured nearly 6ft long, with many believing it to be the biggest cod ever caught in North Atlantic waters.

Seafood buyer Nathan Godley at Premiere Seafoods bought the prized fish for £165 after hearing that a ‘head-turning fish’ was coming on the market.

The giant fish was displayed proudly in the shop window before being sold off to the happy Grimsby locals.

It had been pulled aboard the ship Berger in Iceland at a depth of 125 meters.

Sharing the exciting catch on Facebook, Premiere Seafoods wrote: “Who’s got the chips?

“33-kilo cod (over 5 stone) bought this morning off Giles & Nigel JBA (Fish Sales) Ltd at GyFishMarket.

“Cheers guys we’ll look after her from here. She’s a beauty.”

Since charing about their beautiful monster, news has spread far and wide with many national organisations rushing to cover the local phenomenon.

Rough estimates suggest that the fish could be around 20 years old, evading fishermen’s hooks for years.

Speaking about the ‘codzilla’, Managing Director Nathan said he put in a bid over the phone two days before the auction at the market, securing the fantastic prize.

He added: “I bought it because we have a good social media presence and the likes of Radio Humberside, Look North and you pick up on these things. It’s all good for business plus, at the end of the day, I sell lots of cod. It wasn’t like I was buying something that I couldn’t make money on.

“Getting talked about and noticed doesn’t do the company any harm at all. For the whole of Monday, it just laid on a pallet in the shop for the customers to gasp at. They took lots of photos of it.”

Nathan added that he had never bought a fish of this size before, calling the eight-stone cod a “beast”.

“I would say it’s the largest I’ve bought ever. So I was very surprised to see it,” he said.
