The Mariners get the job done away from home to continue their unbeaten streak.
Grimsby were looking to finish the Easter weekend in style during their away trip to King’s Lynn Town.
The Mariners came into the game off the back of an immense victory against top spot Stockport County last Friday, hoping to retain their winning streak against a side who sat at 21st before kick-off.
Ahead of this afternoon’s fixture, Town gaffer, Paul Hurst made a plethora of changes to his starting lineup which saw Maguire-Drew and Dieseruvwe both start the match.
The hosts got the clash underway and enjoyed the better of the ball, Grimsby began slightly scrappy.
Omotayo almost put the Linnets in front after his toe met the ball, but his effort could only glide wide.
Moments later, John McAtee tested his luck from 25 yards out. His bullet of a strike thumped the bar, but the referee blew his whistle and gave a free kick to the hosts.
Just before the 15-minute mark, the Mariners came close to the opener after Maguire-Drew and Dieseruvwe linked up. Jones saved the resulting shot to retain the 0-0 score line.
Grimsby suffered a huge blow after McAtee picked up an injury and was forced off after just 20 minutes, a worrying situation given his integral role in the team.
King’s Lynn was defending for their life’s after Town continued to apply pressure.
Dieservuwe had his effort deflected which fell nicely to Max Wright who instinctively headed it towards goal. The ball was cleared off the line, the hosts were lucky not to have conceded.
Max Crocombe was called into action after a dangerous piece of play for the Linnets.
Sundire threaded a delicious ball into the path of Barrett, the latter switched the ball to his right foot before he pulled the trigger straight down the keeper’s throat. Crocombe saved with ease to nullify the threat.
The Mariners found themselves 1-0 up just before the first half concluded.
Grimsby broke with pace, catching the hosts off guard. Max Wright’s initial effort struck the post and ricocheted back out towards Abrahams who beat the keeper to make it 1-0.
The first 45 minutes concluded with the Mariners leading. The result was overshadowed by McAtee’s injury.
Fox kicked off the second half as Grimsby would have been looking to put the game to bed.
The opening 20 minutes displayed an uneventful and scrappy affair, neither side was able to properly punish the other.
The Mariners eventually managed to emulate their impressive attacking ways seen in recent matches after the visitors enjoyed a string of chances.
Dieseruvwe experienced a hat-trick of opportunities minutes apart that would have killed off the game, although nothing materialised despite Grimsby’s intense pressure.
Town had to keep their cool during the final moments of the fixture to ensure victory. Crocombe catching the ball following a corner kick to eradicate a dangerous attacking move from the hosts.
The match finished with another win for Grimsby Town, who extended their unbeaten streak to 5 games.
