Scunthorpe town centre beggar arrest splits opinions
The arrest of a beggar in Scunthorpe town centre has split the public opinions.
Yesterday (26 April), Humberside Police took to social media to announce that they had arrested and charged a man with “persistent begging and causing a nuisance to members of the public”
The Facebook post, which has since garnered a mixed response, stated:
“As part of our continued work with partner agencies in Scunthorpe Town centre, officers have arrested and charged a male with persistent begging and causing nuisance to members of the public”
Scunthorpe residents quickly flooded the comments section to voice their thoughts following the announcement, with one local suggesting they feel intimidated and refuse to go shopping alone.
“About time, it’s awful walking down the street, and I know for a fact that at least half a dozen of them come on the bus from Hull”, another added.
“It’s so annoying! I think I will just get in my car and head off to Meadow Hall instead. They say shop local but I’m so sick of people asking for money in the town centre”, stated one shopper.
Conversely, some residents disagreed with the proceedings as one local argued:
“Maybe if they had help, they wouldn’t need to be arrested”
