Further boost for Scunthorpe as new school set to be built!

Scunthorpe will see yet another boost to the town as a brand-new school is set to be built.

According to the North Lincolnshire council, a new post-16 special free school is set to be built which will support students in developing crucial life skills and prepare them for adulthood.

Earlier in the year, the council released their “inflation-busting budget” with plans to invest £170m on residents in the coming year.

A large portion of this total will be targeted towards vulnerable children, families, and those with disabilities, enabling them to access more opportunities and lead happier lives.

It is understood that the work on the new school, just one of the confirmed projects within the budget, is moving at speed.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Councill, said:

“This is just one example of the council’s commitment to our young people. We are investing heavily to enable all children and young people in North Lincolnshire to get the best opportunities to develop and achieve”

“The Government continues to support our ambitious plans on this key priority area and they have funded the construction of Trent View College”, he added.

“It will have a huge impact on many people, the school will greatly benefit students with special educational needs and disabilities, boosting access to skills and employment as they grow into adulthood”

The school, now named Trent View College, is being built on land off West Common Lane.

The school will provide up to 60 places for pupils aged between 16 to 24 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The council said students will be thoroughly supported as they develop their skills throughout a range of subjects such as catering, arts and technology, and building on previous learning experiences.

The school is being developed by the council in collaboration with the Government’s Department for Education (DfE) and the Wellspring Academy Trust.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “Having seen the impact of the experience of my son who needed to go out of county for a specialist college placement, I completely understand how important and valuable it is to have great facilities like this locally”

“This will enable young adults to stay in their community amongst friends and family and provide the opportunity to work with local employers gaining new skills and important connections to give them the best possible to start to adult life”, she added.
