End of an era at Scunthorpe United

End of an era at Scunthorpe United following a 7-0 defeat in their final EFL game.

Yesterday, the Iron travelled to Bristol Rovers for what would be their final game in the English Football League after relegation to the National League was confirmed in April.

Whilst Scunthorpe sat in misery, Rovers celebrated promotion thanks to goal difference.

The Pirates knew they needed to better Northampton’s 3-1 win at Barrow, meaning Rovers had to score at least five goals.

The Iron went into half time 2-0 down, Connor Taylor and an own goal from Oliver Lobley sparked motivation for the hosts to grab the game by the scruff of the neck during the second 45.

The flood gates eventually opened with two braces from Aaron Collins and Anthony Evans. Elliot Anderson sealed the deal with the 7th goal with 5 minutes left to play.

The Iron only managed one shot on target and retained less than 30% ball possession the entire game.

Players and fans alike would have been wanting this domestic campaign to conclude as quickly as possible, following Leyton Orient’s 3-0 victory in April, the final nail in the coffin for Scunthorpe.

Speaking on social media after the game, the club simply stated:

“The Iron’s 72 year stay in the EFL comes to an end”

Fans were quick to share their thoughts and feelings, one saying:

“Unlucky lads, you tried hard today. Gave everything!”

“Really hope we perform next season! Non-League is tough but were behind the boys”, added another.

Conversely, a substantial portion of fans shared their displeasure with the clubs leadership.

“Sadly, today’s result isn’t a surprise which shows how far we’ve fallen in such a short time. An ego and managerial revolving door got us here. The owners deserve no better, the fans do!”, one added.

“Not just an end, but an embarrassing end, the culmination of one man’s mismanagement over the past few years, hope he’s proud of what he’s done”, stated another.
