Scunthorpe care home surprises woman for her 100th birthday!

A care home in Scunthorpe has surprised one of their residents for her 100th birthday.

St Mary’s Care Home, in Scunthorpe, has been celebrating Renee Nesbitt’s birthday this month.

Earlier in May, the lovely staff at St Mary’s wished the World War Two survivor a very happy birthday, celebrating with balloons, flowers, a delightful cake, and of course, a card from the Queen.

Yesterday, the party continued as staff surprised Renee with a special visit from the Scunthorpe Fire Brigade, who wanted to thank her for her service to the London Fire Brigade during the Second World War.

Speaking to Gi Scunthorpe, St Mary’s told how Renee enrolled with the London Fire Brigade to assist firefighters after heavy air raids by German forces.

According to the LFB (London Fire Brigade) government website, it was not uncommon for women to join the fire service as fire watches, drivers, and communications networks operators.

In fact, it is understood that more than 70,000 women had enrolled to offer their support during the war!

In her later life, Renee enjoyed traveling and is said to have seen “most countries in the world”

Renee even resided in Spain with her daughter but soon settled down in Scunthorpe after she sadly passed away.

St Mary’s staff described Renee as a quiet lady who loves arts and crafts, adding:

“She can become very committed to her arts and crafts and always puts 100 percent into any activity”

Everybody at Gi Scunthorpe News would like to wish Renee a very happy 100th birthday!

Additionally, we would like to thank the wonderful staff at St Mary’s Care Home for the genuine love and consideration for all residents.
