Scunthorpe WW2 veteran celebrates 100th birthday!

A Scunthorpe World War Two veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday.

William Greaves, also known as Bill, celebrated his 100th birthday last week (May 12) surrounded by his friends, family, and the wonderful carers at the Edmund House Bupa Care Home.

Born in the early 1920s, Bill was one of seven children. As his father fought in the infamous First World War, Bill helped raised his siblings with his mother.

Bill left school aged 12 to work on a Scunthorpe farm before leaving his home for Manchester at 18-year-old, where he met his wife, May.

By 1941, Bill and May were happily married. The couple enjoyed holidaying in their caravan, dancing, and long walks in Mablethorpe.

Bill and May have a son and daughter, are proud grandparents of six, and great grandparents of seven!

It is understood that Bill enlisted in the army following the breakout of the Second World War, receiving medals for his efforts as he toured Italy, Egypt, and Belgium.

After being released from his military obligations in 1947, Bill perused a long-lasting career in steam railways and steelworks, until he ultimately retired.

As Bill celebrated with his loved ones, he received a very special card from the Queen to mark his 100th birthday.

Speaking to the Lincolnite, Bill said:

“I don’t feel like I am 100 years old. I feel very lucky to have celebrated my special day surrounded by my lovely family and friends”

“My carers did a great job decorating the lounge and arranging for my favourite musicians to pay a visit to help me mark the special occasion”, he added.

“My motto is not to stress too much, you will only look back when you get older and wonder what all the stress was about. Also, you are never too old to admit when you are wrong and say that you are sorry”
