Town set to face difficult opposition in Papa Johns Trophy

Grimsby Town will face difficult opposition in this seasons Papa Johns Trophy.

Earlier today, the group stages for the Papa Johns Trophy was announced with GTFC set to face-off against tough opponents.

In a statement, it was confirmed that Grimsby Town, placed in “Group F,” will play against Mansfield Town and Derby County.

Additionally, eight Premier League academies have been invited to join the Northern groups, which are:

  • Everton U21,
  • Leeds United U21
  • Leicester City U21
  • Liverpool U21
  • Manchester City U21
  • Manchester United U21
  • Newcastle United U21
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers U21

Each group will be completed following the EFL’s fixture release day on Thursday (23 June). In addition to the Papa Johns Trophy draw, the Mariners will learn their League Two fixtures in full on the same date.

Both Mansfield and Derby will pose difficult tasks for the Black and White Army. Durig their 2021/2022 League Two season, the Stags found themselves 90 minutes away from promotion into League One, but Port Vale’s ruthlessness proved too strong.

Recently relegated Derby County will have something to prove this year, following a woeful season in the Championship.

Back in the English Football League, Grimsby will look to retain their spectacular form after an incredible play-off run that earned the Mariners a new nickname, “The Comeback Kings.”
