Excitement builds as Big Wheel and Fair arrives in Cleethorpes!
There have been fair rides arriving in Cleethorpes ahead of an eventful Armed Forces Weekend, set to dazzle locals and visitors.
From earlier on today, the highly anticipated Big Wheel has returned and is almost constructed, standing proud to be seen from afar.
Several fair rides have arrived at the Pier Gardens ready for the event, opening on Friday, June 24th. It will see a fabulous carnival journey through the resort, to kickstart a promising full weekend.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the resort over the three days of events such as thrilling air shows, mouth-watering food stalls, and fantastic parades.
Road closures will be in place in the event area across the weekend as some areas will be closed from Thursday daytime through to Monday lunchtime.
The core area of the Armed Forces weekend, from the library to Brighton Street, and all access to Alexandra Road and High Cliff Road, will be closed to traffic from Friday at 6 am through to Sunday night. That closure will be expanded for Friday and Saturday to include the stretch from the library to Sea Road.
Friday night will also see the return of the Cleethorpes Carnival for the first time in five years.
A rolling roadblock will be put in place between Grant Street and the Boating Lake. The parade will form up in Grant Street from 4 pm, set off at 6 pm, and the rolling roadblock will travel with the parade to make sure the participants are safe. Outside of the weekend closures, the roads will be reopened as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Saturday will see additional closures being put in place through the morning to make sure the parade route is clear. This will once again include the area from Grant Street, but also take in the area bordered by Cambridge Street and Humber Street. These additional road closures will be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so.
Most car parks, with the exception of the Civic, Knoll, and Sea View Street Car parks will remain open.
Access to the prom parking will be from the Sea Road end, and a diversion will be put in place to access Grant Street car park from Poplar Road. Parking bays will be suspended within the road closures and a tow-away zone will be in operation.
There are also several changes to public transport, either through diversions or because of strike action.
Following the announcement that the RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) members will be striking on 21, 23, and 25 June the rail industry has introduced a temporary timetable from 21 June to 25 June.
There will be very limited train services running on the rail network during this period so please only travel by train if necessary.
Now, the Armed Forces Events Team has shared the full event list for the long-awaited weekend, including flight times and parking availability.
The Armed Forces Major Events Team said: “We have completed plans for the specific elements of the 2022-Armed Forces Weekend, and we are now able to share these updated timings with everyone.
“Please be aware that some elements can be affected by weather and mechanical reliability, and we will keep the information updated as soon as we are informed of any changes. Flying displays are in the planned order of appearance.”
