UK promises an extra £1bn in military support for Ukraine

The UK is set to provide an additional £1b in military aid for Ukraine, a promise to almost double the support for the fight against the Russian invasion.

The latest funding takes the total up to £2.3bn and the UK has also committed £1.5bn in support for Ukraine.

Boris Johnson has said British spending was “transforming Ukraine’s defences.”

After President Zelensky urged Nato leaders for further support, the pledge was promised.

President Zelensky has said the monthly cost of defence for Ukraine was around £4.12bn.

The UK Government has said the latest aid announced will be for “sophisticated air defence systems” and “thousands of pieces of vital kit”.

The figure of £1bn is to come from departmental underspends, the BBC reported, which includes contributions from the Welsh and Scottish Governments. The Government has said the extra support was to help Ukraine recover lost territory, also referencing their “valiant defence”.

President Zelensky said ” Russia still receives billions every day and spends them on war. We have a multi-billion-dollar deficit, we don’t have oil and gas to cover it.”

The PM Boris Johnson also spoke at the conference in Madrid where Zelensky appeared via video link, Mr. Johnson said “Putin’s brutality continues to take Ukrainian lives and threaten peace and security across Europe.

“As Putin fails to make the gains he had anticipated and hoped for and the futility of this war becomes clear to all, his attacks against the Ukrainian people are increasingly barbaric.

“UK weapons, equipment, and training are transforming Ukraine’s defences against his onslaught.”

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the BBC “It’s not a blank cheque and we are providing specific amounts of funding… we’ve been very clear with them we will not let them down.

“We will continue to support them in the long term in whichever way we can, in a way that we can afford.”
