Council leader issues statement after Recreation Ground ‘disgrace’

The North Lincolnshire Council leader has issued a statement following Brigg Recreation Ground restrictions being imposed.

Brigg sports fans were left in disbelief after they were told they could not continue training on the town’s Recreation Ground on Wrawby Road.

Calling the council a “disgrace,” one resident expressed their anger after he was handed a letter stating the restrictions during Brigg Town’s under 8’s training session.

In his social media post, he said:

“North Lincs council is a disgrace!!!! Brigg Town under 8’s have been training on the recreation ground tonight and a council employee has come over and handed us a letter stating that the kids aren’t allowed to train on the rec during summer??? Absolute joke.”

The restrictions to the ground were enforced to protect the football fields from “overuse” with hopes to provide better quality playing surfaces when the season commences again.

However, the initial announcement was met with controversy which triggered North Lincolnshire Council leader, Rob Waltham, to issue a statement, which read:

“The way this has been presented is unfortunate. The council will not and should not restrict access to Brigg Recreation Ground – it will remain open and accessible through the summer for the community to enjoy.

“However, to maintain the quality of the pitches for the football season when it starts later in the year there will be a programme of activity through the coming months.

“Where the pitches need to be repaired there will be cordons and I would like to ask people to help us maintain the high standards by using other areas during these times.

“Any suggestion of complete closure and restriction is simply not true.”
