Scunthorpe students left feeling ‘suffocated’ in school uniform

Students from a school in Scunthorpe have told how the incredibly warm temperatures have left them feeling “suffocated” and “trapped” whilst wearing their school uniform.

Students from Outwood Academy Brumby, In Scunthorpe, have told BBC Look North how the warm temperatures experienced in recent weeks have left them feeling the negative side effects thanks to their branded school uniforms.

Despite the hot weather conditions, Outwood Academy has told students they must bring their heavy, dark coloured blazers regardless of the heat.

However, the school confirmed in a statement pupils could remove their jackets whilst navigating the campus, but it is mandatory for students to bring the branded attire to school with them.

Speaking to BBC Look North, one student recalled how she felt “suffocated” whilst wearing the blazer at school, adding it made her feel trapped. The student claimed you are only able to remove the blazer if the head teacher gives it the green light.

Whilst the Scunthorpe school has urged no student would face disciplinary actions for forgetting to bring the blazer to school, one student told BBC Look North she faced sanctions after leaving her blazer at home.

She stated students could face “isolation or detention” if they fail to bring the branded jacket.

Whilst the school are enforcing the jacket mandate, the educational facility has issued advice for parents and students during these warm months:

“Could we please advise that parents send students to school with water bottles tomorrow to ensure that students are hydrated throughout the day, thank you,” Outwood Academy Brumby said via Twitter.

Parents were quick to respond with strong words after failing to address the uniform notion, one parent adding:

“Let them leave the blazers at home other academies are doing it! It’s common sense!”

“I understand the uniform policy but we in an Amber alert. Let the children leave blazers at home in this weather. Most employers relax the rules in this heat,” added another.

What do you think about the school’s uniform policy?
