Grimsby manager Paul Hurst is under increased pressure

Paul Hurst on pre-season performances, fan support and League Two action

Following a 0-0 draw against Lincoln City under difficult weather conditions, the Town gaffer spoke to Gi Grimsby News about an array of topics.

Last night (19 July) saw Hurst’s Mighty Mariners host the Imps inside a rocking Blundell Park for the first time since the National League campaign ended.

Town fought extremely hard against higher opposition last night, a team performance that pleased the Grimsby boss.

Hurst told how the game was “exactly what we needed” as the Black and White Army prepare to kickstart life back in League Two later this month. He added that the pre-season campaign will ultimately allow his players to “believe in themselves” and generate confidence in all areas of the pitch.

Hurst did acknowledge the Imps’ threat going forward, suggesting “it was a little bit easy for Lincoln to have the ball” but quite rightly highlighted the League difference between the two sides.

When asked about individual player performances, Hurst quickly reiterated the pride he felt after the full time whilst was blown, adding his squad “did their jobs.”

The Grimsby gaffer did touch on his new recruits and their performances last night with Bryn Morris receiving positive words:

“I think Bryn, in his first time here (Blundell Park) at least, I thought he did well tonight and showed some of the things that he’s very good at.

“He also competes, he’s not just a ball player he will compete and put his foot in which we know the fans love and I love. I don’t want people shying away from tackles if there to be made.”

Hurst added new signing Danilo Orsi, a dangerous goal threat, “worked his socks off – it was a tough night in terms of them real chances coming for him, but he’s done exactly what I say he will and again, maybe on another night something drops.”

Paul Hurst later confirmed he is not a “million miles away” from selecting his starting eleven for the first game of the League Two season, although did stipulate “nothing is set in stone.”

In his closing statement to us, when asked about his personal response to the incredible support from fans during season ticket sales, Hurst jokingly replied “I think we need a bigger stadium” before describing the support as “fantastic.”

“This place will be bouncing and that’s what we look forward to,” added the Grimsby boss.
