Changes to cycle superhighway following spate of vandalism

The recently installed cycle superhighway will see some changes following a spate of vandalism that has left a sign badly damaged.

North East Lincolnshire Council has made the decision to remove the Cycle Superhighway project sign at Hobsons Way following vandalism. They added that it will be removed “as soon as possible”.

Last month many locals were frustrated after weeds had sprouted through the new cycle path, creating large holes that were difficult to bike over.

The council has since resurfaced the path thanks to the original contractor and put further measures in place to ensure it does not happen again.

A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “We are aware that weeds had started to grow on a section of the Cycle Superhighway along Hobson Way.

“Following discussions with the contractor who carried out the initial works, they have agreed to carry out the repairs, free of charge, despite being outside of the defect period. A weed membrane has also been installed below the path to further prevent the weeds from growing through.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused and reassure those affected that this has now been resolved.”

The project oversaw a total of 3.8km of new off-road cycleway in a bid to give cyclists a route across the South Humber Bank to access work and training facilities

The Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership funded £2.2 million towards the plan, with £400,000 contributed by the council and private sector.
