Pool League semi-final encounters decide knock-out plate final matchup

A double header of the Scunthorpe Pool League team knock-out plate took place at Mulligans to determine this season’s finals on Tuesday night.

Schnapps Retro A, who finished ninth in Division Seven in only their second campaign in the league, were looking to pull off one more giant killing to make this season’s final against all the odds.

But their impressive run in the competition came to an end, as Division Two side Winterton Jubilee secured their place in next week’s final with a convincing 5-0 victory.

Consecutive frames from Render, MacGillivray, Page, Prior and Drinkall was all that was needed to settle the tie without the need for the doubles set.

In the other semi-final matchup, Division Two champions Mulligans Majestic Sausage Dogs took on Division Five champions Showmans Young Ones.

MSD raced to a 2-0 lead, with multiple KO finalist Lee Fairweather and Jimmy Quinn scoring frames, before youngster Cameron Welch pulled one back for Showmans to halve the deficit.

Elliott Marais, who was the 2017 Goliath poker champion, restored the two-frame advantage in frame, but Showmans’ team captain Liam McLoughlin scored in frame five to keep the score line close.

Veteran Jez Cookson used all his experience in the final singles frame to ensure the Mulligans side went into the doubles set with a 4-2 advantage.

Fairweather and Marais made short work of the opening doubles set with a break-dish clearance, securing a 5-2 victory and a place in next week’s final.

The result in the end arguably flattered MSD, as Showmans Young Ones put up a great fight in some tightly contested frames.

The Pool League finished off the season with all 70 sides that started the season finalising the campaign with no teams withdrawing at any stage.

Potential new players and teams wanting to take part next season are encouraged to do so as soon as possible, with the next campaign expected to get underway either just before Christmas or in the New Year.

Interested parties are asked to contact Matthew Smithson on Facebook or are welcome to attend the next seasonal general meeting at Mulligans on Thursday, 3 November at 7pm.
