£6.4m Council tender for M181 Burringham a ‘huge step’

£6.4m Council tender for M181 Burringham a ‘huge step’

North Lincolnshire Council is launching a multi-million pound tender for the contract to build the latest M181 junction.

The proposed motorway junction is set to open up 60 acres of land for development, which is intended to reduce congestion at Berkeley Circle.

It is hoped the junction will help ease commute times to major cities from Scunthorpe.

The development follows the creation of a new roundabout, and a new east-west link road between the M181 and Scotter Road, Scunthorpe.

The new tender will be open for six weeks with the contractor expected to be announced by Christmas.

The council funded the project with £6.4m from National Highways. The junction will also feature a new roundabout on Burringham Road.

North Lincolnshire Council leader, Cllr Rob Waltham, said: “This is a huge step towards the next stage of development for the motorway network in North Lincolnshire which itself is a critical piece of infrastructure that will have a huge impact across the area.

“The impact will be felt by drivers using Berkeley Circle, commuters coming from Bottesford, Ashby and Messingham and the people living in Burringham. We have protected homes from flooding with major investment in key locations along the River Trent, we’ve developed the first motorway junction further along the M181 which, once developers put in their plans, will create hundreds of new, well-paid jobs and now we can launch the tender for the next stage.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing this next major development get started, unlocking the land so new jobs can be created as businesses invest and grow,” added Cllr Waltham.

The council report states the contractor will be selected through value for money, or the Most Economically Advantageous Tender.
The tender process is set to be approved by Wednesday, November 9.

Cllr Neil Poole, portfolio member for highways, said: “We have been able to make great strides in enhancing the existing road network across North Lincolnshire, particularly through the use of new, innovative technologies.

“This development of the network, the second major investment in the motorway in recent years, is to be welcomed.”
