Councillor hits out over ‘disgusting’ fly-tipping

A ward councillor has hit out against those fly-tipping in the Park Ward area and plans to take security measures to prevent it from happening again.

The Wintringham Road entrance to Ainslie Street park has regularly seen piles of rubbish dumped in recent weeks, with large items such as chairs, bathtubs and mattresses littering the street.

Councillor Daniel Westcott hit out those committing the ‘disgusting’ fly-tipping on Facebook, stating: “We are currently following up our requests to put a stop to these scenes, that have been blighting the Wintringham Road entrance to Ainslie Street Park, for some time now.

“NELC put a great deal of time and effort into transforming the end of the park prone to flooding and Park Ward councillors are not prepared to let a handful of individuals ruin the wildlife haven for local residents. The small area of land adjacent to the garage complex is unadopted, but there is always a solution.”

Fly-tipping isn’t the only issue in the area, as recently a member of the public removed a wheelie bin that had been set alight from the bandstand at People’s Park, with residents stating that arson is a regular problem.

Litter picks regularly take place in the park to tackle the issue but now Cllr Westcott is taking action to ensure the area stops being targeted.

In a statement to Gi Media Cllr Westcott said: “At present, Park Ward councillors are working with the relevant agencies to address the fly-tipping, which has been an issue at this location for some time. Whilst the very small area of land concerned is unadopted, it does lie at the side of both an entrance to Ainslie Street Park that includes a cycle lane and footpath.

“Hopefully, we can erect some temporary CCTV overlooking the Wintringham Road entrance and also install a collapsible bollard for nearby garage owners and residents to use.

“The far end of the park is looking so much better and become a real haven for wildlife, following  major landscaping  work by NELC and is something local residents should be able to enjoy and be proud of.”
