By Victorian shops restored to former glory
Two Victorian shop fronts on Alexandra Road in Cleethorpes have been restored to their former glory in recent restoration works.
The shop front and façade of the building has been completely renewed at properties 21 and 22 Alexandra Road, next to the Baptist Church.
With pictures from the Victorian era showing the Alexandra Road buildings, the resort’s Townscape Heritage Project Manager Carol Heidschuster and Architect’s Ross Davy worked with Richard and planning to reinstate a traditional heritage front with cast iron gutters and gable features that were lost decades ago.
Works have included:
- A new pitched roof with a slate finish
- Projecting bay windows at first floor with the reintroduction the gabled roof on the second-floor windows
- Timber box sliding sash windows installed on the upper floors
- The all floors and business entrance painted with colours from the Victorian palette
- Tiles used on the stall risers underneath the wooden windows to replicate what was there before, and the central door now has an angled recess.
Grimsby-based building and construction company AG Developments Ltd completed the works headed up by Chris George. “It’s been a challenging project, and one of our first in the restoration arena, but one that’s been very much worthwhile when you see the results! With living and working locally, this stretch of buildings is one that we’ll see on a regular basis, which will be really nice in years to come.”
This follows the unveiling of the stretch of balconies above numbers 21-24 earlier this year, which had been restored following conservation work.
Cllr Tom Furneaux, Cabinet member for heritage, said: “People in Cleethorpes and beyond love the Victorian properties and balconies, and we need to make sure our heritage is preserved for the future. I’d like to thank the property owners for working with us on this project – what a difference it has made!”
The Discover Cleethorpes’ Heritage programme, made possible thanks to National Lottery players, is breathing new life into historic buildings and public realm in the heart of the town centre.

“The National Lottery Heritage Fund is committed to ensuring that areas which have not benefitted from high levels of investment are supported to ensure their all-important heritage can shine once more. We know that heritage can bring communities together, play a significant role in boosting the local economy and instil a real sense of pride of place for people and Discover Cleethorpes’ Heritage is a fine example of how this can be achieved.”
