Toilets could return to North Promenade

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) is exploring the possible return of public toilets to Cleethorpes’ North Promenade.

The site’s former toilet block has been shut for several years now, but investigations are being made to explore a possible return.

The authority’s Tourism and Visitor Economy Scrutiny Panel met this week to discuss the subject which is causing growing frustration among locals who have collated a petition of almost 2300 signatures calling for their return.

Petition organiser Danny Rising wrote: “After several years of seeing people, myself included, suffer from a lack of adequate public toilet facilities in Cleethorpes, it’s time that NELC took some positive action, and quickly.

“The current facilities simply are not adequate for where we are told NELC want this town to be, and it is holding back visitors from coming more frequently.

“Yes, there are many bars and restaurants which have toilets, but this is not their area of responsibility, NELC need to be held accountable for this, and they need to take positive action. “

Councillors were told that the owner of North Promenade toilets is keen to bring back the toilets as part of a new facility which would include a cafe.

This summer a spokesperson for NELC said the situation was ‘under review’ after thousands flocked to the resort for Armed Forces Day overwhelming the limited facilities. This resulted in hundreds of complaints about the condition and quantity of local public loos.

Now, councillors say they would welcome the return of the toilet block after they received a report covering the need for the provision.

But despite the shift in perspective the panel made it clear that “there is no budget available to support the running costs for additional provision”. They added that ways of providing additional toilets without affecting funds for other projects are being explored.
