Dogs ‘at risk of death’ from sewage-infested seawater

Vets have warned that dogs are at risk of death from sewage-infested seawater and rivers after waste was dumped in local waters rendering water at Cleethorpes unsafe.

The incident cost the resort its Blue Flag status, with local businesses complaining that the situation has cost them significant amounts of money through lost tourist trade.

Veterinary surgeon Marc Abraham has warned pet owners against allowing their pets from going in the sea while sewage is present.

He said dogs can contract illnesses such as gastroenteritis by ingesting poisonous seawater directly or from licking their fur after a swim.

“It can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and be bloody expensive if they are hospitalised, at around one or two thousand pounds,” he continued.

In some cases, dogs can die from gastroenteritis.

Now, local Liberal Democrat Councillors have launched a petition. They are calling upon the council to “play its part in helping to clean up and protect our waterways.”

Liberal Democrat Councillor Nicola Aisthorpe said, “Although the sewage crisis is a national issue that is affecting many areas, North East Lincolnshire Council has a level of power and influence that should be used, particularly to help prevent adding to the problem any further.

“This includes strategic planning and working more closely with Anglian Water.

“The Liberal Democrats will not stand by and allow the continuing pollution of our precious rivers”.
