Giant killings galore in the Scunthorpe Pool League KO preliminary round

Two Division One sides suffered defeats in the Scunthorpe Pool League knock-out preliminary round this week.

Kicking off the giant killings was a rampant Beckwood Sex Panthers, who saw off last season’s Division Two and plate double winners Mulligans Majestic Sausage Dogs.

The Dogs were well and truly neutered by the Division Five side, as team captain Matthew Smithson somehow managed to prematurely pot the black on his second shot of the frame.

His team worsened as the evening went on, eventually losing 5-1 to the Bottesford-based side.

Redbourne Mods were also shown the exit door, as Cocked Hat B – who lead Davison Two – claimed an excellent 5-3 victory.

The lowest-ranked side to progress to the next round was Division Six’s Foxhills Bulldogs after they beat Division Four’s RHH Hospital Club.

The big three in Division One all made it safely through to the next round, as both Mulligans Trojans and Showmans Fu Cue whitewashed Grosvenor and Mulligans Warriors respectively.

Showmans Army also progressed, but the plucky Division Six side Mulligans Unique made them work for their 5-2 victory.

Beckwood Bombers made it two wins out of two for their venue this week after sailing through to the first round at the expense of Beacon Sailors.

Division Three sides Mulligans Tight Rack and Mulligans ST ensured their progression with 5-2 wins over Showmans Hornets and Ashby Crown A.

Messingham Crown of the second division completed the lineup of teams progressing, as they dispatched Division Seven highflyers Bottesford Town B.

In Division Six this week, Schnapps Elite moved off the foot of the table and up to ninth with an encouraging 9-4 victory over Division Seven champions Keadby WMC.

The league is trialling new divisional team knock-out competitions this season.

A handful of fixtures got underway this week, with both Brumby Hall B and Mulligans Runaways progressing to the quarter-finals of the Division Six edition with 5-2 victories over Talbot and Refs Corner Pocket.

League newcomers Redbourne Z had to come from 4-2 behind to see off Priory 5-4, while Scunthorpe Bowl secured a 5-2 win at Mulligans Spurs to advance in the Division Seven version of the competition.
