Match report: Late equaliser earns Iron draw against Bromley

Scunthorpe United earned a valuable point at home to promotion-chasing Bromley in the National League on Saturday afternoon.

A late equaliser from Elliott Whitehouse ensured the game ended 1-1 after Michael Cheek had opened the scoring for the visitors early on in the second half.

The point caps off a monumental week for the club, with David Hilton’s takeover being followed by United claiming four points out of six in the space of just three days.

Interim manager Michael Nelson decided to name an unchanged side from the team that earned the Iron’s first win on the road since December 2021 at Halifax Town in midweek.

With Glanford Park buzzing at kick-off, the Iron started the game well, as Colin Daniel had the first opportunity of the game, but his effort was comfortably saved by Reice Charles-Cook in the Bromley goal.

Corey Whitely then went close to opening the scoring for the visitors after his curling, right-footed effort went just wide of the far post.

A mazy run from Cameron Wilson saw him beat a number of men inside the box, before the ball made its way to Mason O’Malley, whose shot went agonisingly past the right-hand post.

The hosts continued to push forward and create opportunities throughout the first half, pegging Bromley back towards their own box, but the visitors defended well to limit too many more clear-cut chances.

The Ravens showed more intent at the start of the second half and were rewarded for their efforts on 56 minutes when Cheek tapped the ball home to give his side the lead.

Kellen Fisher almost grabbed a second goal for the visitors after his strike took a big deflection and bounced just wide of Owen Foster’s post.

Scunthorpe then made a couple of changes and pushed more men forward in an attempt to claim a late equaliser.

The alterations worked a treat, as Whitehouse came to the rescue for the hosts on 84 minutes when he controlled substitute Liam Feeney’s cross into the box and fired the ball home.

United almost claimed all three points just moments later after Wilson’s powerful effort was well kept out by Charles-Cook.

Deep into injury time, Bromley almost claimed the victory for themselves through Besart Topalloj, but his shot just drifted wide of the post.

The point means the Iron remain second bottom in the National League table and five points from safety, but it’s certainly been a positive week for the club.
