Humberside Juniors claim memorable win, while Scunthorpe Pool League remains tight

The Scunthorpe Pool League reached the halfway point of the season this week and Humberside’s pool teams were also back in action.

A number of games were put on hold, as dozens of members from Beacon, Bottesford Town Club and from the general pool fraternity paid their respects to former player Jimmy Welsh, who sadly passed away recently.

Jimmy, who played in the league for a number of years, represented Beacon, Desert Rat and the former Mallard pub.

In Division One, all of the big three title chasers were in action and each scored big wins against mid-table sides.

Showmans Fu Cue were the slight beneficiaries this week, gaining a point’s worth of ground at the top with an away at sixth-placed Broughton Club Pirates.

Mulligans Trojans are officially top dogs at the halfway stage, having won their eighth game of the season at home to Showmans Chaos.

League and couple double winners Showmans Army remain 12 points adrift after their 9-3 success against Division Two and plate double winners Mulligans Majestic Sausage Dogs.

Winterton Jubilee stormed into a five-point lead at the top of Division 2 with an outstanding 10-3 away win at Cocked Hat B.

Fellow villagers Messingham Crown remain second despite being held at home to Division Three champions Beacon Rat Outcasts.

RAOB got the better of fourth-placed Brumby Hall A in a key battle with an 8-4 win to stay on course for one of the promotion places.

Mill Road Black Cats shot up to fifth spot following their comfortable 10-2 victory over bottom-placed Brumby Hall Stars, while Black Beauty A closed the gap on the safety zone after claiming an 8-5 win at relegation-threatened Fedoras.

Ashby Crown capitalised on Bottesford Town’s postponed fixture this week to go top of the league, with their 6-6 draw with Harry’s Bar.

In second spot is Pig & Whistle, who have turned their season around splendidly in recent weeks with an excellent 9-3 win against bottom side Cocked Hat.

Old Farmhouse’s 8-5 victory at Glennys Bar moves them level in fourth with their hosts, while Showmans Spartan’s 8-5 away win at Mulligans Tight Rack keeps them out of the drop zone.

Showmans Bandits remain top for another week, as they narrowly won 8-5 at RHH Hospital Club, and Chancel Flyers did their promotion aspirations no harm this week, winning 7-5 against Liberal Club. Mulligans Misfits’ 7-5 victory against Chancel kept them in sixth.

Harry’s Bar Harriers – who are big favourites to win Division Five this season – recorded their eighth consecutive victory (9-3) at home to Ashby Crown, pulling them 14 points clear of the chasing pack.

It was honours even at Beckwood this week in the derby, as the Bombers drew with the Sex Panthers.

Black Beauty’s 8-4 win over Roxy Rack Em keeps them fourth, while Mulligans Youth secured only their second win of the season (8-5) against high-flying Showmans Hornets.

There was little change in Division Six, as Mulligans Runaways stay on course to win the title with an 8-5 win at Refs Corner Pocket in Winterton.

Beacon Rats claimed an 8-5 victory at Foxhills to pull clear of the drop zone, while Schnapps Elite also won by the same scoreline at Brumby Hall B to stay fifth.

Schnapps A and Talbot remain second and third respectively, as they played out a 6-6 draw.

Division Seven champions Keadby WMC’s 9-4 victory at Division Seven runners-up Mulligans Unique keeps them on course for a promotion place.

Youth side Mulligans Spurs won by their largest margin to date, smashing stablemates Warriors 11-2 to move up to eighth and Lord Roberts won by the same score line at Scunthorpe Bowl to stay in the title picture.

In an early title decider, Schnapps Retro B got the better of Bottesford Town B to remain top, while Redbourne Z also stayed on course for a title challenge, winning 9-4 at Priory.

Schnapps Reloaded moved up to fifth following their 8-5 win over newcomers Royal Hotel and Schnapps Retro A came out on top in the battle at the bottom, with an 8-4 victory against fellow Frodingham Road side Grosvenor.

Last weekend, Humberside – the area’s oldest county pool organisation – restarted in successful fashion away at South Yorkshire.

The A team won their debut match 25-19, while the B team drew 22-22 and the seniors registered an impressive 22-14 victory.

But the day was all about the junior side, which was banded together in a very short space of time prior to the inaugural match.

The youngsters, relatively new to each other and to the new international rules, pulled off a superb 22-14 win on their debuts at this level – showcasing the team’s unified efforts this week.

Humberside travels to Nottinghamshire next month for their second fixture of the season.
