Match report: Town Women crowned champions with victory over St Joseph’s
A late winner against St Joseph’s Rockaware of Worksop handed Grimsby Town Women the league title yesterday afternoon.
Alisha DeJonge’s header sealed a 1-0 victory for the Mariners at Oasis Wintringham, ensuring promotion and top spot were secured with two games still left to play.
While Town were dominant throughout the match, they couldn’t turn the chances they created into goals until the last moments of the match.
It was perhaps fitting that it was midfielder DeJonge – who has been one of the Mariners’ top-performing players throughout the season – that rose highest inside St Joseph’s box to head the ball home in the 87thminute.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the whole side and, when the final whistle sounded, those celebrations continued for the team that have dominated the East Midlands Womens Regional Football League Division One North this season.
Speaking after the match, manager Hayley Cox said: “It was an absolutely fantastic game for the girls. They thoroughly deserved that win, but I didn’t think the goal was going to come.
“We had so much possession, so many shots on goal and then Alisha steps up with three minutes to go with a bullet of a header.
“The girls deserve it all. From start to finish, the season that they have had and the run they have been on, every single member of the squad has been fantastic. The management team couldn’t be prouder.”
Goalscorer DeJonge said: “It’s great. All of the girls worked really hard and we want to all thank the management team.
“We were so close to getting the goal and it’s shocking really that it was just one goal that did it but that’s all we needed. Everyone is so happy, and we can’t wait for the next step.”
To celebrate the women’s success, their final home match of the league season on Sunday 23rd April against St Joseph’s Rockaware of Worksop will be played at Blundell Park at 2pm.
