Cricket report: Week four of LCCL sees rain interrupt cup matches

The heavy thunderstorm on Friday and the poor weather on Coronation Day meant many of the scheduled cup games had to be decided by bowl-offs or the toss of a coin as just three matches were played to a decisive conclusion.

GEORGE MARSHALL CUP 1ST ROUND

In a game reduced to 25 overs per innings, Broughton beat Cleethorpes 2nds in the penultimate over after the Meggies set a target of 130 for five, largely down to 50 from George Carlton and 32 from John Mansfield. Sean Clixby picked up three for 21 before old-hand Paul Mitchell guided his side home for the loss of seven wickets when hitting 39 not out and Steven Johnstone recording 30. Andy Severn took four for 31 for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Caistor Town scored 127 for five at Brumby Hall, with 54 from Scott Indian as Mohammed Rahman and Jack Forrester took two wickets each. Appleby Frodingham 2nds reached 46 for two when the game was abandoned, meaning Caistor claimed the victory on a better run rate.

Hartsholme cruised to a 10-wicket win over HLC, who were dismissed for 71 before the Lincoln outfit raced to victory. Lindum 2nds scored 97 for seven, with Aidan Lockwood hitting 32, while Will Bailey and Jake Pollard took two wickets each for Scothern. That was as good as it got, though, with Lindum reaching the quarter-finals after proving successful in a bowl-off. Messingham beat Haxey in the same fashion, as did Outcasts against Barton Town at Hirst Priory.

BOB WELTON CUP 1ST ROUND

Top scorer of the day was Mohammed Saad Khan, who hit 83 for Brocklesby Park alongside 43 from Jhangit Latif in a total of 204 for seven at home to Broughton 2nds. The visitors were then bowled out for 64, with Ben Fish and Jake Parker both scoring 16 to add to the two wickets they picked up in the first innings. Shahzad Ali captured three for eight for Brocklesby.

Grimsby Town 2nds eased to a six-wicket win against Hartsholme 2nds after dismissing them for 56 before reaching 57 for four, with David Unsworth seeing his team through to the quarter-finals.

Lindum 3rds scored 73 for three against Nettleham 2nds when the weather intervened. Nettleham went on to win the bowl-off, which is also how Barton Town 2nds beat Hibaldstow and Cherry Willingham saw off Market Rasen 2nds.

Alkborough beat Louth 2nds when after winning a coin toss, while Normanby Park were awarded the game against Alford, who were unable to raise a team.

LCCL DIVISION THREE EAST

Horncastle bowled Grimoldby out for 67, with two wickets each from Thomas Hackett, Kai Stephenson and Finn Fisher. Liam Evans then hit 26, as the hosts replied with 68 for eight, but Aron Owen, who had earlier top-scored with 22, captured an impressive six for 18.

The other Division Three East fixture saw HLC 2nds set a tough target of 183 for three at Immingham Blossom Way before restricting Cleethorpes 3rds to 177 for eight to claim a narrow six-run victory.

LCCL DIVISION THREE WEST

Brigg Town picked up their first win of the season when they bowled Scothern 2nds out for 69 thanks in the main to Phil Dewfall, who took four for 15. Billy Paine and Wesley Leak scored 11 runs each, while Dan Bradley hit 30 not out and Guy Haxby registered 28 to guide Brigg to 70 for two.

The other three Division Three West games were all abandoned. Messingham 2nds had reached 43 for one against Outcasts 2nds when the weather closed in, while table-topping Haxey 2nds were 47 for six at Owmby when they too were interrupted. Shreyas Chingale picked up three for 14 and Sam Ashcroft two for 13 for Nettleham 3rds.

It was a similar situation at Cherry Willingham 2nds, who were struggling at 58 for five against Scunthorpe Town 3rds when the rain arrived, with the visitors’ Lucy Bailey and George Luya taking two wickets each.
