Mulligans Trojans extend Pool League lead, while players take part in charity game

Mulligans Trojans extended their lead at the top of the Scunthorpe Pool League in the latest round of fixtures and players raised a considerable amount of money in a charity game.

They moved nine frames clear in Division One with just six games to go, having earned their 11th victory of the season in a 9-3 success at home to Beacon B.

Showmans Army well and truly turned the tables on their stablemates Fu Cue after recording a remarkable 10-3 away win. That shifts the momentum in their favour as the second favourites for the title heading into the latter stages of the season.

Winterton Jubilee suffered only their second defeat of the campaign in Division Two, as they went down to an 8-4 loss away at seventh-placed Brumby Hall. That result leaves the hosts just eight points adrift of the top spot despite their league position.

Messingham Crown took advantage of Jubilee’s slip-up, closing the gap at the top with an 8-4 win over Black Beauty. Fellow title challengers Cocked Hat B and RAOB could only muster draws this week.

Ashby Crown’s Division Three title aspirations were well and truly dashed, as Mulligans Tight Rack thumped the hosts 12-1. Despite only managing a draw with Old Farmhouse, Pig and Whistle went back into first spot.

At the top of Division Four, Showmans Bandits remain in pole position for yet another week following their 7-5 success over promotion-chasing Chancel Flyers.

Mill Road Dynamite stay in the hunt for a promotion place with their narrow 8-5 away win over struggling Redbourne Madness.

It’s business as usual in Division Five, as Harry’s Bar Harriers picked up their 11th victory of the season in an 8-5 away at Beckwood Bombers to stay top.

Beckwood Sex Panthers could only muster a 6-6 draw away at strugglers Roxy Rack Em, but the result keeps them seven points clear of Showmans Hornets, who were beaten 7-5 away at Mill Road B.

Mulligans Runaways have now gone two games without a win in Division Six following their 6-6 away at Keadby, while WMC have a huge 10-frame lead at the top.

That lead is over Schnapps A, who did their best to close the gap this with a 9-3 victory at home to Winterton-based Ref’s Corner Pocket.

The title race in Division Seven continues to gather momentum once again, with Lord Roberts claiming their eighth win of the campaign away at Priory to stay top. Redbourne Z continued their late charge for the title after beating Royal Hotel 10-2 at home.

In the team KO, there we no surprises for any of the sides at the top of Division One, as Showmans Fu Cue, Army, Chaos and Broughton Club all made it through to the quarter-finals with minimal fuss.

But Beacon A, who currently sit in seventh, were victims of a giant-killing against Division Four league leaders Showmans Bandits after they recorded a superb 5-2 win.

Beckwood Sex Panthers are the lowest-ranked side left in the competition and, once again, they were in the mood for pulling off a shock after seeing off Division Two side Brumby Hall A with a 5-2 victory.

Division Two leaders Winterton Jubilee and Division Three high-flyers Bottesford Town A complete the last-eight lineup, as they picked up cup wins against Black Beauty B and Cocked Hat A.

In the team KO plate, Betsy and Hugo’s Mulligans Majestic Sausage Dogs, who are the holders of the competition, progressed through to the last 16. They made hard work of their victory, however, as the plucky Ashby Crown made them work for the 5-3 victory.

They will be joined in the next round by fellow Division One sides, Redbourne Mods and Showmans Cobras after they both advanced against Keadby WMC and Mulligans Unique.

Foxhills Club, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, advanced at the expense of their club rivals Foxhills Bulldogs while struggling Division Six side Brumby Hall B made it through at the expense of third-tier outfit Harry’s Bar A in the deciding frame.

Elsewhere, representatives of both Showmans and Mulligans hosted the fourth annual charity football event at the weekend.

Despite a drab first half, where Mulligans led 1-0, the second half turned out to be anything but, with the teams adding a further 10 goals.

In the end, Mulligans prevailed for the third time in the event’s history, as they claimed back the Jamie Christie Memorial Trophy in style with an excellent 9-2 victory.

Players and supporters of the event managed to raise an incredible £1,650 for charity, with SOBS and Lindsey Lodge the beneficiaries.
