Four residents at Portsmouth care home die with Covid-19 symptoms

Five residents at a Portsmouth care home have died after four exhibited symptoms of Covid-19. The deaths at Harry Sotnick House were confirmed by Portsmouth City Council this afternoon.

A number of other residents are reportedly being cared for in isolation at the home after they also began showing symptoms of Covid-19.

A statement said: “Portsmouth City Council has confirmed coronavirus cases in one of the city’s care homes.”

The care home has been closed to visitors since Sunday the 22nd of March.

There has been no formal diagnosis of Covid-19 in those who died, and they will not be tested, as Public Health England have stipulated that coronavirus tests should not be used if there will be no change in the care given to the patient.

Councillor Matthew Winnington said:

“This is an incredibly sad and difficult time for our residents and families.

Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and those who are concerned about the wellbeing of the people in our care.

We are doing all we can to keep our residents and staff as safe as possible, and are following the infection control processes we have put in place for Covid-19.

We are working with Public Health England specialists. We have shared our plans with them, and they have endorsed the approach we are taking.

We’re keeping families updated on everything we are doing.”

According to Public Health England the number of coronavirus cases in Portsmouth has now risen to 104.

A total of 56 patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital who had underlying health issues have died of the disease.
