Grimsby HMRC office set to close

Grimsby’s HMRC office is currently based in Imperial House at the Riverhead, but is set to close later this year.

This follows an announcement by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, that it would be closing branches across the country.

Instead, they will be centralised in 13 regional centres. This has resulted in a number of local job losses.

It is understood that staff have been given an exit package to aid their transition into new work, and a number of members of staff who were due to finish their roles in June have been kept on for an additional three months, due to the current situation regarding coronavirus.

A HMRC spokesperson said:

“HMRC is transforming into a more highly-skilled organisation offering modern, digital services – a tax authority fit for the future.

“It has secured sites for all of its future regional centres serving every region and country of the United Kingdom and they are in locations where the majority of HMRC employees are already based.

“In 2015, we said that we would be closing our Grimsby office in 2020/21. We have supported staff by ensuring one-to-one meetings with their manager, helping to identify where HMRC can support them individually and by seeking opportunities to find alternative job roles locally, possibly with another government department.”

The department says that the intention of the move is to provide a better service to the taxpayer at a lower cost.

The 13 new regional centres will be based in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Croydon, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Stratford.
