Cleethorpes’ Central Promenade to close to cars

North East Lincolnshire Council have announced that as of today, Cleethorpes’ Central Promenade will close to cars every day in the first against Covid-19.

The decision is part of an ongoing discussion regarding how to safeguard the resort against an influx of visitors during the Covid-19 lockdown, following the announcement that people are now permitted to drive further for unlimited outdoor exercise.

Previously, Cleethorpes’ Central Promenade was only due to be closed on weekends.

But now, North East Lincolnshire Council will close the Central Promenade to road users from 8am to 6pm daily in an effort to encourage social distancing as the summer weather starts.

No end date has been given, and it is expected that the closure will be in place for the foreseeable future.

The Council said that information collected over the last weekend showed that visitors had been parking elsewhere and walking to the seafront, increasing the amount of space there.

It was therefore deemed that the closure had been a success, and that it should be extended.

Councillor Callum Procter, said:

“I’d like firstly to thank people who were in the resort at the weekend for acting responsibly and helping us implement the new arrangements.

“We have a lovely resort here, and realised early on that we would need to do something to spread visitors out through the resort to help them maintain social distancing.

“Last weekend’s trial seemed to have worked in the main, and we have received some good feedback about the closures from residents and local businesses.

“Officers are working through the feedback, particularly that about the North Prom closure. And we are also working on medium and long term plans to create a safe resort for everyone to enjoy, but we need to do this with consideration to our local businesses and residents.

“While ideally we’d prefer everyone to stay at home, if you do choose to come to Cleethorpes, we’d ask you to please follow the Government guidelines, maintain social distancing and keep everyone in our resort safe for everyone here.”

Digital signs have been put in place instructing people on social distancing measures.
