Calls for Grimsby residents to learn new skills in face of unemployment

Experts have called for Grimsby residents to seek training and learn new skills in the face of soaring unemployment.

Leading independent adult education provider, PeoplePlus, has re-opened its training centre on Fisherman’s Wharf in Grimsby, in order to support those left unemployed by the coronavirus pandemic.

PeoplePlus are urging people to learn new skills to help them get back into work.

The site will provide in-person training within government social distancing and hygiene guidance, whilst also continuing to provide online learning to help people back into the work.

Working alongside the UK’s largest recruitment company, Staffline, PeoplePlus have helped more than 15,000 people across the country into work in supermarkets and food production during the crisis.

It is feared that those left unemployed because of the coronavirus lockdown may struggle to find work in the sectors employing them before the crisis.

New figures published by the Office for National Statistics showed that the number of Universal Credit claimants in Grimsby increased by 2,300 last month.

Simon Rouse, Group Managing Director of PeoplePlus, said:

“Some sectors will take longer to recover than others and people will have to find work in areas that are completely new to them.

“It’s so important that people left unemployed by this terrible virus know support is there for them and how they can get help in order to get back into work.

“What we did see during the lockdown is that whilst some sectors were really badly affected, there was an urgent need in others like food production.

“There were opportunities for people furloughed or who lost their jobs to find alternative work to provide a measure of financial security.

“This shows the importance of being able to learn skills and transfer experience.”
