Children at a school in Lincoln are being forced to self-isolate after another pupil tested positive for Covid-19.

St Faith & St Martin Church of England Junior School in West Parade has advised several of its students to stay off school for at least 14 days.

Bosses at the school say this is a precautionary measure and only impact those who have been exposed, a group of up to 15 other children.

The child tested positive for virus after a member of their family was also hit with the illness.

This comes after primary schools were permitted to reopen on June 1, to students in reception classes, and years 1 and 6.

Most schools which reopened chose to do so with strict social distancing measures in place.

Head teacher Martin Kyle said:

“The school re-opened last Monday, with a number of measures in place to limit the potential spread of coronavirus.

“On the Tuesday, a family member of one of our pupils tested positive for Covid-19, and, as a precaution, the child was asked to remain at home and seek a test.

“The pupil has now also tested positive, and, in line with the Government guidance, children in the pupil’s ‘bubble’ have been advised to self-isolate for 14 days, just in case.

“Parents have been informed, and the school remains open to children in our other ‘bubbles’.”

Many parents, teachers and unions have criticised the decision to reopen schools, expressing safety concerns.

Primary School Teacher John Roos said “teachers and teaching unions overwhelmingly feel that the pace and manner in which the government is planning to reopen schools is in fact not planned, but chaotic”.

This comes after a member of teaching staff at Bishop King Primary School in Lincoln tested positive for Covid-19 last week, forcing the school to close only a few days after it reopened.
