Freshney Place to reopen Monday with big changes

Freshney Place is set to reopen on Monday 15 June after nearly three months of closure, and big changes can be expected.

This in line with government guidance which states that non-essential shops are allowed to open as of Monday, as long as they have social distancing measures in place.

All non-essential shops and services were ordered to close on March 23 when Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the nationwide lockdown to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

Freshney Place closed accordingly, with the only open shops, Marks and Spencer for the food hall and Poundland, being accessible from Victoria Street.

The pharmacy at Superdrug has been accessible via the Riverhead entrance.

When the centre reopens, shoppers can expect a one-way system to be in place, as well as strict limits on the number of people who will be permitted into the centre or any individual shop at once.

The car parks will also be closed.

Amanda Austin, Director of Freshney Place said:

“We’re delighted to say that we can finally start to open and welcome customers back into the shopping centre.

“Our absolute priority is the safety of everyone and we have been working incredibly hard over the last few months to ensure the centre will operate as effectively as possible whilst following social distancing and increased hygiene measures.

“We want our customers to be reassured that we have followed government advice and whilst some of the measures in place might cause delays, we do hope the public will be understanding of their purpose, which is to ensure the safety of everyone.

“These are unprecedented times and whilst we are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the centre we have to ask for patience when it comes to shopping, particularly in the first few weeks whilst everyone adapts to these new measures.”

Most stores will reopen immediately, these include

Waterstones, HMV, Millets, TK Maxx, Perfume Shop, JD Sports, Clarks, Boots, Max Spielmann, River Island, Superdrug, Holland and Barrett, Deichmann, Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Bodycare.

Marks & Spencer, Poundland, and House of Fraser will also be open, but with access only from Victoria Street.

The only entrance/exit which will be open is the Riverhead entrance.

Shops have been rearranged and heightened cleaning measures have been put in place to ensure staff and customer safety.

These details are subject to change.
