New garden waste system in Scunthorpe

A new system for disposing of garden waste is being introduced by North Lincolnshire Council, giving residents in Scunthorpe more flexibility.

Residents are now able to order a significantly bigger green waste bin from the council at a cost of £39 per year.

The existing brown bins remain free, but at 240 litres, the new bins will be 70% larger than the existing 140% ones.

Free compost bins are also available.

Residents under North Lincolnshire Council can register their interest here.

Discussing the new scheme, Councillor David Rose said:

“Our commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment of North Lincolnshire is for the residents who live here today but also for our children tomorrow.

“The charge at £39 is competitive and only recovers the council’s costs for providing the additional service.

“We continue to make great strides, reducing our carbon footprint while enhancing the places and spaces of North Lincolnshire.

“This latest offer for residents is just one of many measures we are implementing to enable our communities to flourish.”

Council leader Rob Waltham added:

“This is fundamentally about two things: protecting the environment and offering residents a choice as to what best suits their needs.

“The existing 140 litre brown scheme will remain free of charge, making us one of the only councils in the county to provide a free universal garden waste collection service.

“We’ve seen in the last few months the overwhelming community response to protecting each other against Covid-19 – the response was based on lots of us doing small things which collectively make a big difference.

“The message holds true when it comes to ensuring we protect the environment for generations to come.

“We know some people can compost at home, we know some people really value the existing garden waste collection and we know for others this enhanced service will make a big difference.”

It is hoped that the new scheme will prevent people with larger gardens needing to visit recycling centres so regularly.
