Doncaster robber armed with bamboo cane jailed

An armed robber who struck twice at the same Tesco Express store in Doncaster has now been jailed.

During the first raid, Wayne Stead, 34, armed himself with a bamboo cane and launched a raid at the store in Hatfield.

The following day, he robbed the same store using a hammer.

On July 13, Ian West, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court how on March 6, at around 8.10pm, Wayne Stead entered the premises, returning eight minutes later armed with “a two-and-half-foot garden bamboo cane.”

According to Mr West Stead pointed the cane at a staff member, telling him that if he moved he would wrap the cane around his head.

He then stole two cases of cider.

Mr West added:

“The following day the same mood overcame him about 9pm and he returned to the store and armed himself with a hammer and partially covered his face and entered the premises and was immediately recognised.”

Wayne Stead, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery.

Andrew Smith, defending, said:

“Wayne Stead has been a thorough nuisance for a long, long time but he has not committed serious offences and these offences were out of character for him.

“The reality was he was desperate to continue to feed his drug habit and he has gone to extreme measures to the concern of the people going about their business in the shop.”

Wayne Stead has previous convictions, and has been sentenced to 40-months in custody.
