By Cleethorpes to mark VJ Day
The 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day) will be recognised with a special ceremony in Cleethorpes on Saturday (15).
This commemorates the end of the Second World War when Japan surrendered in 1945.
While VE Day (Victory in Europe) marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, thousands of armed forces personnel were still fighting in the Far East.
A short, socially-distanced ceremony will take place to mark the occasion at the Remembrance Gate in the resort. It starts at 11am but the public are asked not to gather and form a crowd.
Deputy Mayor Cllr David Hasthorpe, with dignitaries and veterans, will come together for a short speech and a two-minute silence to remember those from all nations involved.
Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: “Celebrations may have to look a little different this year, but we will still remember those that fought in the Far East.
“When the Second World War ended 75 years ago with the surrender of Japan, British soldiers, sailors and airmen were serving in the Far East, fighting hard to achieve victory and were among the last to come home. They will be at the heart of the commemorations as the nation thanks them for their service and sacrifice.”
Alex Baxter, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Lincolnshire and MD of the Armed Forces Major Events Team, added: “On this anniversary, we wish to remember what we owe the veterans of the Far East campaign. They brought an end to the Second World War, they changed the course of history for the better, liberated South East Asia, and many paid the ultimate sacrifice.
“That’s why on this remarkable anniversary – we will remember them.”
