Six Hull FC players, five of whom played against the Salford Red Devils on Sunday, have tested positive for Covid-19.

Two members of the coaching team have also returned positive results.

Playing and coaching staff were tested on Monday, the day after the game.

A further player will be retested after an inconclusive result.

Hull FC and the Salford Red Devils have both been told to cancel training over the next few days.

Those who tested positive will now be required to quarantine until at least 21 August.

The results of Salford’s tests have not yet been returned.

A statement issued by Hull FC yesterday evening reads:

“Hull FC and Salford Red Devils have cancelled their scheduled training sessions for Wednesday morning after a number of Hull FC players tested positive for Covid-19 following Sunday’s Betfred Super League fixture between the teams.

“Public Health England, the Hull FC players and staff, and the Salford Red Devils club were informed of the situation this evening.

“Salford’s routine weekly test results have not yet been received, but the RFL is now analysing Sunday’s match to determine how many players from each team will also be required to self-isolate under the test and trace procedures that have been agreed with Public Health England.

“Announcements on the impact on forthcoming Betfred Super League and Coral Challenge Cup fixtures over the next two weekends will be made as soon as possible.”

Any player involved in lengthy contact in a tackle with a player who has tested positive will also have to self-isolate.

The news is a bombshell in only the second week of the Super League’s return from lockdown.

Elsewhere in Hull, a P&O Pride of Hull crew member has reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

Three other seafarers have also allegedly been sent home to Hull to self-isolate.

This follows an announcement by Hull City Council that the latest seven-day rate of confirmed coronavirus cases in Hull is 1.9 per 100,000 of the population.

That figure compares with a national rate of 9.4 per 100,000 of population.
