Weather warnings in West Scunthorpe

Weather warnings previously issued by the Met Office have been lifted for much of Lincolnshire, however they remain in place across areas of West Scunthorpe.

Forecasters introduced new warnings at the weekend, as thunderstorms are expected to arise in line with cooling temperatures following the recent heatwave.

For parts of Scunthorpe, there is still a risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms heading into the weekend and early next week.

Two warnings are in place.

The first comes into effect at midnight on Friday and will be in place for 30 hours, with the second beginning at midnight on Sunday and lasting for 45 hours.

Before then, hot weather warnings also remain in place.

Temperatures have to be forecast to reach 29 or 30C over the next few days, and are expected to fall no lower than 15C.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said:

“Areas of showers and thunderstorms associated with a hot and humid air mass stranded across the southern half of the UK are expected to continue through Friday, and not solely during daylight hours.

“Many areas encompassed by this warning will miss the thunderstorms altogether, but where they occur, heavy rain (20-30mm in an hour, and possibly as much as 50mm in 2 to 3 hours), frequent lightning, and in some places large hail are all potential hazards.

“The greatest chance of impactful showers is expected to be in the southern half of this warning area, where afternoon showers are more likely to be slow moving and prolonged.”
