Woman jailed following domestic murder

A woman from Hull was jailed yesterday following a knife attack on partner, which left him with fatal chest injuries, Humberside Police have announced.

The incident took place shortly after midnight on Saturday 9 November 2019 at their shared home address on Dodthorpe, Hull.

Emergency services attended the address the couple shared with their two children, where Ronald Portz was sadly pronounced deceased.

According to several reports, the relationship was turbulent and violent on both sides.

As such, this tragic case has no real winners.

Godwin was herself hospitalised a number of times due to violence from Mr Portz.

The Crown Prosecution Service have alleged that the most recent of her injuries caused by him included a broken cheekbone.

They added that the killing of Mr Portz occurred amid ongoing domestic abuse in the relationship.

On Monday 27 April,  Sally Godwin, 29, of Dodthorpe, Hull pleaded guilty to manslaughter of Ronald Portz.

She was remanded in custody for sentencing at a later date, and subsequently appeared at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday.

The incident which resulted in Mr Portz’s death is alleged to have begun as a row over drugs.

Ms Godwin was arrested and charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to the circumstances surrounding mr Portz’s death.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Christine Calvert said:

“This was a violent attack fuelled by alcohol which resulted in a man sadly losing his life.

“My thoughts remain with Ronald’s family through this incredibly difficult time.

“I hope that they feel a sense of justice following today’s sentencing.”

Yesterday at Sheffield Crown Court, Sally Godwin has been jailed for a total of six years.

His Honour Judge Jeremy Richardson QC told Ms Godwin:

“You were undoubtedly in a corrosive relationship that was long term.

“The abuse was perpetrated on you by him and you also perpetrated violence on him on occasion but the greatest violence was on you that caused you to have a deterioration in your mental health. You suffered a temporary loss of control on November 9.

“As a result of the collected avalanche of violence directed at you, your mental health deteriorated.”

“It must always be remembered that a man has been killed at your hands and but for your loss of control, this would have been a case for murder.”
