Demolition underway in Scunthorpe redevelopment
The demolition of the former Scunthorpe market is well underway, as the redevelopment of key sites in Scunthorpe continues.
Demolition works began over two months ago, but have been interrupted several times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and an incident of suspected arson.
The works are part of an ongoing redevelopment plan, which has been submitted by North Lincolnshire Council.
The £22m proposal of Scunthorpe town centre will see the former market, as well as Church Square and Library Square redeveloped, providing locals with new spaces for play, exercise, and relaxation.
It is thought that the former market, which was damaged in a fire earlier this month, could transformed and replaced with a multi-purpose building.
This would be comprised of student accommodation, an enterprise and innovation hub, and a function space which will operate as a dedicated events space.
There will also be a pop-up market.
The 1350sqm three-storey site is set to be spread across half of the former market, fronting directly on to the High Street.
Councillor Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“These plans for the High Street are ambitious and radical in equal measure. The Government has already committed £25m to Scunthorpe through the Towns Fund.
“This sustainable development will give residents another reason to rediscover the town centre.
“The plan is designed to bring people back into the High Street for retail yes but also as a place to live, to work and to spent their leisure time.
“These proposals will make a huge difference but they are just one component part of the wider development plans which we are leading for our county town.”
Councillor John Davison, Cabinet Member for Scunthorpe, added:
“This is another great scheme for Scunthorpe.
“The Government cash will make a real difference here. The scheme will provide an exciting future for the former Scunthorpe site.”
